In basic terms, it allows you to make and receive telephone calls using the internet and a gateway provider that allows communications to take place effortlessly between VoIP systems and the conventional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). VoIP is now the Telecom Solution of choice for most SME’s.

3CX is a software based private branch exchange (PBX) based on the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard. It enables extensions to make calls via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.

A conventional PBX, located on-premise, normally a server or powerful PC (depending on the number of users), the PBX resides physically within the office.

Although this method of deploying and using a PBX is changing to more utilise the benefits of the cloud, some businesses still opt for this kind of deployment. Similar to our cloud PBX, our on-premise PBX uses 3CX.

In short, a SIP Trunk is required to receive and deliver telephone and unified communications – without a SIP Trunk VoIP just wouldn’t work.

In a little more detail, here’s a more technical defination:

SIP trunking is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and streaming media service based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) by which Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) deliver telephone services and unified communications to customers equipped with SIP-based private branch exchange (IP-PBX) and Unified Communications facilities.
